NBC Approves The Import of GM Soybean, Ensuring Health and Safety of People

31st meeting of the National Biosafety Committee (NBC) was held at the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination (MoCC & EC), under the leadership of the Secretary MoCC & EC. The meeting was attended by NBC members, including the Chairperson of the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) / Director-General of the Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency (Pak-EPA), alongside other esteemed members of the NBC.

The meeting's agenda focused on the review of Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) cases, specifically evaluating applications from 16 importers of GM soybean grain for Food, Feed, or Processing (FFP).

After a comprehensive review and based on the unanimous recommendations of the TAC, all submitted cases were approved by the NBC. This approval not only marks a significant step in advancing biotechnology in Pakistan but also underscores the vital role of the Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency (Pak-EPA) in streamlining the import process. The agency's rigorous evaluation considered the potential health risks associated with GM soybean, based on recommendations of scientific evidence to ensure the health and safety of the population in Pakistan.
