Vehicular Emission Monitoring Operation Conducted by Pak-EPA in Islamabad
In line with the Pakistan Environmental Protection Act, 1997, and its mandate to regulate environmental quality within the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT), the Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency (Pak-EPA) conducted a vehicular emission monitoring operation on 2 December 2025.
The Compliance Monitoring Team of the Pak-EPA, in collaboration with the Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) and Islamabad Police, conducted an inspection at a major traffic junction near Faizabad, Ojhri Camp, Islamabad.
The activity aimed to assess compliance with the National Environmental Quality Standards (NEQS) for Motor Vehicle Exhaust and Noise, with a specific focus on diesel-powered heavy-duty and light-duty vehicles, including buses, coasters, hiaces, pickups, and tankers.
The inspection revealed that a significant number of vehicles were operating in violation of NEQS limits for smoke opacity. In accordance with the Compounding of Offences and Payment of Administrative Penalty Rules, 2015, fines were imposed on 22 vehicles, while one vehicle was impounded. Drivers and transporters were directed to undertake immediate maintenance, engine tuning, and corrective measures to ensure compliance with NEQS.
