The 27th National Biosafety Committee (NBC) meeting was convened on April 22, 2024, at the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination (MoCC & EC), chaired by the Secretary MoCC & EC. The meeting included the Chairperson of the Technical Advisory Committee/Director-General of the Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency, along with other NBC members.

A total of 95 cases pertaining to Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) were presented, comprising 48 cases of laboratory manipulation, 35 cases of field trials, and 12 cases for commercialization. The Director-General of the EPA presented each case, and following consensus among committee members, the Secretary of MOCC & EC approved all cases. Additionally, discussions encompassed issues regarding the composition of the TAC committee and the smooth functioning of food, feed, and processing of GM soybean.

The approval granted for the laboratory work and field trial cases helps to encourage ongoing professional development by building their capacities to address complex research challenges and promote GM technologies.

Pakistan acclaims the approval of 12 cases related to commercialization of GM Cotton, marking a significant stride in promoting modern biotechnology through the implementation and regulation of Biosafety practices. GM Cotton holds immense promise for Pakistan's economic growth and development. It stands as a beacon of hope for cotton farmers, particularly in regions vulnerable to climate change and economic instability. By improving livelihoods and bolstering export revenues through access to international markets, GM Cotton is poised to make a significant impact.

This achievement underscores Pakistan's unwavering commitment to the advancement of biotechnology and the adoption of sustainable practices. We look forward to further leveraging the potential of GM technologies for the betterment of our nation and beyond.
