Pak-EPA Conducts Vehicular Emission Monitoring Drive in Collaboration with Islamabad Traffic Police on 30th October 2025

In pursuance of its mandate to enforce the National Environmental Quality Standards (NEQS) for motor vehicle exhaust and noise in the Islamabad Capital Territory, the Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency (Pak-EPA) carried out a comprehensive compliance monitoring activity in collaboration with the Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP).
An inspection drive was conducted at a traffic checking point on Srinagar Highway near Sector G-14 (Stop No. 26, opposite NUST College of EME). The operation focused on old and relatively new heavy-duty diesel vehicles to assess compliance with vehicular emission standards under NEQS.
During the inspection, the exhaust emissions of 50 vehicles, including heavy-duty diesel vehicles, were tested for smoke opacity. Results revealed that 10 vehicles (20%) were non-compliant with NEQS limits. Violators were issued fines/challans and instructed to ensure immediate maintenance and tuning of their cars. Furthermore, the Islamabad Traffic Police impounded three non-compliant vehicles for further legal action as per relevant laws.
It was also observed that a considerable number of vehicles operated by public and private sector organizations did not comply with NEQS standards. Pak-EPA reaffirmed its commitment to implement a multi-pronged enforcement strategy, in collaboration with Islamabad Traffic Police, to control vehicular emissions, mitigate air pollution, including smog, and ensure strict compliance with the National Environmental Quality Standards across the capital.
