Pak-EPA Conducts Inspection of Sector I-9/1 Sewage Treatment Facility

On 15th January, 2026, Pak-EPA team conducted an inspection visit to the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) located in Sector I-9/1, Islamabad. The operational status of various unit processes was reviewed.
The team observed that three phases of the plant were non-functional. Phase IV, however, was operational and treating approximately 1.5 MGD of wastewater. This stands significantly below the plant’s designed treatment capacity of 10 MGD, primarily due to leakages and clogging within the sewerage network. The treated effluent was being discharged into Nullah Lai instead of being utilized for landscaping or horticultural applications.
Environmental samples were collected from multiple points across the facility for analysis at CLEAN lab of Pak-EPA to determine compliance with the National Environmental Quality Standards (NEQS) for municipal effluent.
